Chapter 9 - A Father’s Awakening

One sunny Saturday afternoon in autumn, while Marcus and Adrian were repainting the porch of Marcus's new home, Emma ran up holding her mother’s old recipe book.

"Mr. Adrian! Dad!" she called out, her cheeks rosy with health and happiness. "I made apple pie with Dana! Just like Mom used to make!"

Adrian knelt down to Emma’s eye level, admiring the slightly lopsided, golden-brown pie she held proudly.

"It looks absolute perfection, Emma," Adrian said, his voice thick with emotion.

Marcus walked over, putting a hand on Adrian’s shoulder. "She asked if we could make two. One for us, and one to bring to the children's shelter."

Adrian looked at Emma, then at Marcus. He realized that stepping out of his SUV on that freezing Christmas night hadn't just saved Emma—it had saved him. It had pulled him out of a cold, solitary existence and reconnected him with the beauty of human kindness and family.

"I think that's the best idea I've ever heard," Adrian said, smiling through a glaze of tears.
