Though Vanessa was removed from their lives, Marcus and Emma faced a difficult road ahead. Years of financial manipulation by Vanessa had left Marcus in deep debt. The mortgage on their modest house was in default, and Marcus was forced to work grueling overtime hours just to keep a roof over their heads.

Adrian offered Marcus a position at Hartwell Development as a logistics supervisor for his affordable housing division. It came with a significantly better salary, regular daytime hours, comprehensive health insurance, and family support benefits.
"I'm not doing this out of pity, Marcus," Adrian explained over lunch one afternoon. "You have ten years of warehouse management experience, and you're a man of integrity. My company needs people like you."
