Chapter 4 - The Unraveling Lie
When Marcus Miller returned home from his twelve-hour shift at the distribution warehouse on December 26th, he expected to find his family asleep. Instead, he found the police and a social worker standing in his living room, alongside a furious Vanessa.
"Marcus!" Vanessa cried out smoothly, moving to wrap her arms around him. "Thank goodness you’re home! Emma ran away last night during dinner! She threw a violent fit, stole Madison's things, and snuck out into the storm. I searched everywhere for her!"
Marcus froze, his face pale with exhaustion and fear. "Emma ran away? In the snow? Why didn't you call me at work?!"
"I didn't want to distract you on a mandatory holiday shift!" Vanessa pleaded. "The police are here because some wealthy stranger abducted her from our driveway!"
"That is not what happened, Mr. Miller," stepped forward Social Worker Sarah Hayes.
Sarah presented the official police log and Dana Whitmore’s report. She detailed how Emma was left outside in sub-zero temperatures without winter wear, how the child had suffered mild hypothermia, and how an independent witness—Adrian Hartwell—had stepped in when Vanessa refused to let the child inside.
Marcus turned to look at Vanessa, his eyes wide with horror. "You... you locked her out? In eleven-degree weather?"

"She was lying, Marcus! She was trying to ruin Christmas for Madison and Tyler!" Vanessa yelled, her polished facade finally cracking. "She’s a disturbed child! You know how she acts about her dead mother!"
At that moment, Marcus felt a veil lift from his eyes. The subtle lies over the past two years, the disappearing photos of his late wife, the constant claims that Emma was "difficult" or "ungrateful"—it all collapsed into a terrifying realization.
