Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

For ten years, Adrian Hartwell had lived in a silent mansion. Ever since his seven-year-old daughter, Lily, passed away from an aggressive illness, Adrian had buried himself in his work. He built hundreds of houses for others, yet his own home remained an empty shrine to a lost past.
While Dana coordinated with child protective services and emergency shelter services late into the night, Adrian arranged for Emma to stay in a comfortable, safe, fully vetted temporary family sanctuary managed by Dana's organization. He personally purchased warm clothes, winter boots, a plush coat, and meals for her.
The next morning, Adrian called his top corporate legal counsel, Eleanor Vance.
"I need you to look into a family," Adrian said, his voice quiet but resolute. "The father is Marcus Miller, a night-shift warehouse worker in West Allis. His wife is Vanessa Bennett. I want a full background check on her."
"Adrian," Eleanor cautioned over the phone, "you're a high-profile corporate executive. Getting involved in domestic custody matters can get complicated very quickly."

"I saw an eight-year-old child standing in eleven-degree weather without a coat while her family ate Christmas dinner," Adrian replied firmly. "I don't care about the corporate complications, Eleanor. Find out who Vanessa Bennett really is."
Within hours, Eleanor’s investigation yielded alarming results. Vanessa was not merely an overbearing stepmother—she had a history of financial fraud and civil lawsuits involving former partners. Furthermore, she had been systematically diverting Marcus Miller’s hard-earned life savings into private accounts registered under her own name, while convincing Marcus that his daughter was mentally unstable and rebellious.
