Chapter 5 - A Shelter from the Storm

Marcus immediately rushed to the child advocacy shelter where Emma was staying. Adrian, who had been sitting in the waiting area supporting the facility's holiday drive, stood up as the disheveled, distraught father entered the lobby.
When Marcus saw Emma sitting in a brightly lit playroom—wearing a warm sweater, drinking juice, and holding her brown paper bag—he collapsed to his knees, tears streaming down his face.
"Emma..." Marcus sobbed, reaching out his arms. "Oh God, Emma, I'm so sorry. I'm so, so sorry."
Emma hesitated for a second before hurling herself into her father's arms. Marcus held her tightly, burying his face in her hair, repeating apologies over and over.
"I didn't know, baby," Marcus wept. "I thought you were safe at home. I promise you, I will never let anyone hurt you again."
Adrian watched from the doorway, feeling a warmth in his chest he hadn't experienced in a decade. He saw a loving father who had been manipulated and blinded by a predatory spouse, but whose devotion to his daughter was undeniable.
Marcus looked up and met Adrian’s eyes. "Are you Mr. Hartwell?"

"I am," Adrian said, walking over.
Marcus stood up, holding Emma close. "Thank you for saving my daughter's life. If you hadn't stopped your car... I don't even want to think about what would have happened."
