Chapter 7 - Midnight at Apex

At 11:45 PM, the sky above the city was heavy with pouring rain. The glass tower of Apex Dynamics stood tall and dark against the stormy horizon, illuminated only by perimeter security lights. Inside the building, night shift personnel were sparse.
Ethan walked through the main security lobby, scanning his executive badge at the turnstile. A covert FBI team, disguised as night maintenance staff and security personnel, had already taken positions throughout the building. Agent Reed and I watched from a mobile command unit parked in the subterranean garage level.
Ethan rode the elevator to the 4th floor. The corridor was silent, carpeted in deep navy wool, lined with sleek corporate artwork. He entered his primary laboratory suite, turned on the workstation monitors, and inserted the encrypted drive. As planned, he initiated a massive data transfer signal—a signal designed to ping Richard Sterling’s private phone alert system.
Within ten minutes, the heavy oak door of the lab opened quietly. Richard Sterling walked in. He was a silver-haired man in his late fifties, dressed in a tailored navy suit despite the late hour. He held a leather briefcase in one hand.
“Ethan,” Sterling said, feigning mild surprise. “Working late on a rainy night?”
“Just finishing the project documentation, Richard,” Ethan replied calmly, keeping his hands visible above the desk. “After everything that happened at my home this week, I decided it was safer to keep the final files on the master server here.”
Sterling walked closer, stepping around the central island counter. His posture was smooth, but his eyes were sharp and calculating. “A wise choice. That gas leak at your house... horrific business. Truly. How are Sarah and little Ava recovering?”
Ethan’s jaw tightened, but he maintained his composure. “They’re recovering. The police say they’re close to finding who supplied the gas.”
Sterling smiled faintly, reaching inside his leather briefcase. “Police investigations can be so tedious, Ethan. Always looking in the wrong places.” When his hand came out of the briefcase, he was holding a compact silencer-equipped firearm.
I gasped watching the monitor in the surveillance vehicle below, clutching Agent Reed’s arm. “He has a gun!”
“Hold steady,” Reed whispered into her mic. “Tactical teams are standing by outside the suite door.”
Inside the lab, Ethan didn't flinch. “Is this how you plan to clean up your mess, Richard?”
Sterling’s eyes narrowed. “You were always too sharp for your own good, Ethan. You see, Croft promised me fifty million dollars for the complete turbine architecture. Your little sister almost ruined everything by letting your daughter walk in early. But now, with you here uploading the unencrypted files, I can finish the transfer myself and make your death look like a tragic suicide brought on by stress.”
“You won't get away with this,” Ethan said clearly.
“I already have,” Sterling replied, raising the weapon. “Julian Croft is waiting in the basement parking level right now to take the drive directly to the airport. Goodbye, Ethan.”
Before Sterling could touch the trigger, Ethan ducked behind the heavy steel server cabinet. Simultaneously, the reinforced glass panel behind Sterling exploded inward as tactical SWAT operators breached the room through ceiling access points and doors.
“FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPON!”

Sterling turned in shock, but was instantly tackled to the floor by three armed officers. The gun clattered across the linoleum floor. In the garage below, federal vehicles blocked all exit ramps, boxing in a silver Mercedes where Julian Croft sat waiting. Officers smashed the vehicle windows and pulled Croft out in handcuffs before he could draw a weapon.
The sting was absolute. Both the mole and the mastermind were captured.
