Chapter 6 - The Mole in the Shadows

The discovery of an insider at Apex Dynamics shifted the entire trajectory of the investigation. Ethan was immediately brought into a secure vault at the FBI local field office to examine employee access logs alongside Agent Reed’s team. If someone inside Apex was tipping off Croft, that person had the power to framed Ethan or jeopardize our family further.

“Think carefully, Ethan,” Reed said, pulling up a list of executive staff members who had administrative access to the project encryption keys. “Who knew about your home office setup? Who knew your exact work schedule?”

Ethan ran his fingers through his hair, his eyes red from exhaustion. “Only three senior executives had clearance to approve my remote server connection: Vice President Richard Sterling, Lead Systems Architect David Chen, and my personal department director, Karen Wallace.”

“Let's analyze their credentials,” Reed said, tapping her keyboard. “During the sting at the pier, an encrypted notification was dispatched from an IP address originating on the 4th floor of Apex Headquarters.”

Ethan froze. “The 4th floor... that’s Richard Sterling’s private executive suite. But Richard has been with Apex for twenty years! He’s the one who hired me!”

“Longevity doesn't grant immunity to greed or extortion,” Reed noted sharply. “We ran financial audits on Sterling’s offshore holdings two hours ago. Three offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands showed recurring wire transfers totaling over four million dollars over the last eighteen months—all originating from shell companies linked to Julian Croft.”

The pieces were falling into place with devastating clarity. Sterling had been selling military blueprints to Croft for over a year. But when Apex implemented a new two-factor physical biometric lock on Ethan’s specific turbine algorithm, Sterling couldn't extract the final phase of the project from his own office. He needed Ethan’s local physical security dongle—the one kept in Ethan’s home office desk.

Sterling had discovered Natalie’s financial debts through a credit check service, contacted Croft to manipulate her, and provided her with the chemical delivery mechanism to infiltrate our house.

“He used my sister like a pawn,” I said, feeling a cold fire ignite inside my chest. “He put my daughter in a coma just to get a hardware key!”

“We can arrest Sterling right now,” Agent Reed said, “but if we take him down without capturing Julian Croft himself, Croft will vanish into international waters, and your family will spend the rest of your lives looking over your shoulders.”

Ethan looked at me, then back at Reed. “What do we need to do to get Croft?”

“We feed Sterling false information,” Ethan said slowly, his voice hardening with newfound resolve. “We make Sterling believe that I am coming into the office tonight to back up the final turbine code onto a primary server. Sterling will be forced to contact Croft to execute one last emergency retrieval.”

I gripped Ethan’s hand tightly. We were no longer passive victims hiding in fear. We were stepping straight into the fire to protect our family’s future.
