Chapter 4 - The Web of Deception

Detective Vance watched through the one-way glass as I exited the interrogation room. When I relayed Natalie’s confession regarding Julian Croft and Vance-Vanguard Logistics, Vance’s expression turned deeply serious. He immediately dialed federal agents from the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division.

Within two hours, Special Agent Evelyn Reed arrived at the station. Agent Reed was a sharp, direct woman in her early fifties with graying hair styled in a tight bun. She listened intently as Ethan and I met with her in a private conference room.

“Julian Croft is an alias,” Agent Reed explained, spreading a dossier across the wooden table. “His real name is Viktor Vancev, a former foreign intelligence broker turned corporate espionage operative. We’ve been tracking Vancev’s network for over eighteen months. He specializes in acquiring military-grade propulsion blueprints and selling them to high-bidding foreign entities.”

Ethan leaned forward, his hands clenched tightly. “If Vancev was using Natalie, why didn't he just hack our home network?”

“Because Apex Dynamics uses military-grade air-gapped encryption,” Agent Reed answered. “The physical hardware key—the flash key Ethan carries on his person—is required to decrypt the files. Vancev needed someone inside your home to physically plug the key into the local workstation. Natalie was vulnerable, desperate, and manipulated.”

“Is my family still in danger?” I asked, my voice trembling with protective fierce instinct.

“Vancev doesn't leave loose ends,” Reed said plainly. “With Natalie in custody and the theft compromised, Vancev knows law enforcement is closing in. However, we intercepted an encrypted signal from a server linked to Vancev’s operation late last night. They believe the USB drive was successfully cloned before the police arrived. They don't know that Natalie failed to retrieve the drive.”

Ethan looked up, startled. “Wait... if they think the drive was copied, what are they waiting for?”

“They are waiting for their contact to hand off the data in exchange for the final payment,” Reed said. She looked at Ethan and then at me. “Which gives us a unique window of opportunity. We can use this misunderstanding to set a trap. But to do that, we need your full cooperation.”

That night, federal marshals relocated our family to a secure safe house nestled in the pine-covered hills two hours outside the city. The house was fortified, surrounded by motion sensors and guarded by armed agents around the clock. Ava was thrilled by what we told her was a 'special camping vacation,' unaware of the tactical operations unfolding around her.

As Ava slept peacefully in a small bedroom upstairs, Ethan and I sat on the porch of the safe house, looking out into the dark forest. “I feel like our old life is completely gone,” Ethan said softly, pulling a woolen blanket over my shoulders.

“Our old life was built on assumptions of safety that weren't real,” I replied, taking his hand. “But as long as we have each other, we can rebuild anything. We just have to fight for it.”

In the quiet of the night, we pledged that no matter how deep this conspiracy ran, we would see it through to the end—not just to clear our home of terror, but to ensure that Ava grew up in a world where she never had to be afraid again.
