Chapter 3 - Shadows of Betrayal

Three days after the incident, Ethan and Ava were discharged from St. Jude’s. Our house was declared chemically safe after extensive industrial decontamination and air scrubbers had run continuously for seventy-two hours. Yet, returning to the house felt like stepping into the residence of strangers. Every corner echoed with the terrifying memory of that afternoon.

Ava spent her first evening home tucked tightly in our bed between Ethan and me. She clung to her stuffed bunny, jumping at every subtle creak of the house. Ethan sat staring at the bedroom wall, haunted by guilt. “I brought her into our house, Sarah,” he whispered late into the night, his voice hollow. “When Natalie told us she was broke and escaping an abusive ex-boyfriend, I believed every word. I gave her the keys to our sanctuary.”

“We both believed her, Ethan,” I replied, taking his hand. “She is my sister. We had no reason to suspect she was capable of something so demonic.”

The following morning, Detective Vance called me to the county precinct. Natalie’s formal arraignment was scheduled, but her attorney had requested a brief meeting with me prior to the hearing, stating that Natalie refused to speak to federal investigators unless she was allowed to speak to me first.

I walked into the grey interrogation room at the precinct, my heart hammering against my ribs. Natalie sat across the metal table, clad in an orange jumpsuit. Her eyes were swollen, her hair unkempt, and her wrist cuffs clinked faintly as she moved her hands.

“Sarah... thank God,” she sobbed, taking a shuddering breath.

“Don’t say my name,” I said coldly, remaining standing. “Tell me why you put my daughter’s life in danger. Tell me why you poisoned my husband.”

“I was forced, Sarah!” Natalie cried out, her eyes pleading. “You think I wanted to do this? You think I’m a monster?”

“You brought a chemical weapon into my home!” I yelled, unable to restrain the rage burning inside me. “You nearly killed Ava!”

“I didn’t know about the gas composition!” Natalie wept, shaking her head frantically. “They gave me the canisters! They told me it was just a mild sleep inducer, like an over-the-counter sedative spray! They said it would put Ethan into a light sleep for thirty minutes so I could plug in the USB stick!”

I froze. “Who are 'they'?”

Natalie leaned closer, her voice dropping into an urgent whisper. “Six months ago, I took out a loan to keep my art studio afloat. I didn't know who I was borrowing from. It was a dummy corporation called Vance-Vanguard Logistics, but it was a front for a syndicate headed by a man named Julian Croft. When I couldn't pay the interest, Croft’s men found out Ethan worked for Apex Dynamics. They threatened to kill me, Sarah. They sent photos of Ava walking to school. They told me if I didn't get Ethan’s drive, they would execute my entire family!”

The temperature in the room seemed to drop below freezing. “They threatened Ava?”

“Yes!” Natalie sobbed. “Croft told me that if I put the sleep canisters in the garage air intake on Tuesday afternoon, Ethan would fall asleep, I could get the drive, and Croft’s men would wipe my debt clean and leave us alone forever. I was terrified. I thought if I did it cleanly, no one would ever know! I didn't know Ava’s school had an early release day! When I drove up and saw the ambulances, I realized the gas was far stronger than what they told me. They set me up, Sarah. They used me!”

I stared at my sister, torn between disgust at her weakness and horror at the realization that a much larger, far more dangerous net had been cast over our lives. If Croft’s syndicate was real, then Natalie’s arrest hadn't ended the threat—it had merely alerted the syndicate that their plan had failed.
