Chapter 10 - A Future Filled with Light

Two years later.
The morning sun shone brightly over the courtyard of the minimum-security facility on the outskirts of the state capital. The gates opened slowly, and Natalie stepped out into the crisp spring air, holding a simple canvas duffel bag. She was thinner, but her posture was steady, her eyes clear and calm.
Waiting by the curb was our family SUV.
I stepped out of the driver's side. Natalie paused, tears welling in her eyes, hesitant to take another step forward.
I walked toward her, opened my arms, and embraced my sister. She burst into quiet, healing tears, burying her face in my shoulder. “Thank you for coming, Sarah,” she sobbed.
“Welcome back, Natalie,” I said gently, helping her put her bag in the trunk.
When we opened the car door, Ava was sitting in the back seat, now twelve years old, smiling warmly. “Hi, Aunt Natalie.”
Natalie gasped, wiping her tears, her face lighting up with overwhelmed gratitude. “Ava... look how grown up you are!”
“We brought your favorite strawberry ice cream for the drive home,” Ava said, handing her a small cooler bag.
That evening, our house was filled with the rich aroma of roasted chicken and fresh bread. Ethan welcomed Natalie with a warm, genuine handshake and a hug. We sat around the large dining table together—a family that had walked through the deepest darkness of betrayal, fear, and danger, but had emerged into the light together.
Natalie had served her debt to society, Ethan’s groundbreaking work was safe and benefiting humanity, and Ava was thriving in a world filled with love and absolute security.
After dinner, I stood by the kitchen window, holding a hot cup of tea. I looked at the clock on the microwave wall. It read 3:17 PM. But the number no longer brought a shudder of panic. It was simply a minute in time—a reminder of the day our lives changed forever, and the journey that brought us home to peace.

Ethan came up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist. “Thinking about the past?”
“No,” I smiled, looking out at the beautiful garden where Ava and Natalie were planting spring flowers under the warm sun. “I’m thinking about our future. And it’s brighter than it’s ever been.”
