Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Empire and the Family

Over the next few weeks, life at the Caldwell estate underwent a radical transformation.
Nathan Cole managed the New York office efficiently while Ethan worked from home, shifting his schedule to spend mornings and afternoons with his children. The corporate titan who once measured success in quarterly profits now measured his days by how many times he made Ava giggle or how peacefully Owen slept in his arms.
Clara had moved into the guest suite permanently, not as hired staff, but as a co-guardian and family anchor. She brought warmth, laughter, and structure back into the cavernous mansion. Under her care, the heavy, suffocating grief that had choked the halls was slowly replaced by the vibrant, chaotic energy of four growing infants.
One afternoon, Nathan arrived for a meeting, stepping into a living room that looked entirely different than it had a month ago. Colorful play mats covered the floor, toys were scattered near the hearth, and a large canvas portrait of Nora hung proudly above the fireplace.
Nathan set his briefcase down, looking around in amazement. "Good lord, Ethan. It actually looks like a family lives here now."
Ethan walked in from the kitchen holding two baby bottles, smiling. "It took a while, but I finally learned how to listen."
"And the business?" Nathan asked, pulling out a tablet. "The Singapore acquisition closed yesterday. Stock prices are up twelve percent. You pulled off the biggest deal of the decade while changing diapers."
Ethan laughed, setting the bottles down on the coffee table. "Turns out, delegation works in families just as well as it does in corporations. I have a great partner."

Nathan glanced toward the hallway, where Clara could be heard singing a soft lullaby as she carried Miles down the stairs. "She’s quite a woman."
"She’s family," Ethan said firmly. "And for the first time in a long time, that word actually means something to me."
