Chapter 4 - The Return of the Past

Nathan followed Ethan up the sweeping staircase, bewildered and suspicious. When Ethan pushed open the nursery door, Nathan braced himself for the usual cacophony of infant wailing that he had witnessed during his rare, brief visits to the estate.

Instead, the room was bathed in soft morning light, and four babies were sleeping soundly in their cribs.

Nathan stopped in the doorway, staring in disbelief. "What kind of black magic is this? Did you drug them?"

"No," Ethan said quietly, walking over to check on Sophie. "I stopped trying to fix them."

"Explain. In English."

Ethan turned around, leaning against the edge of a white oak dresser. "We've been treating their crying as a medical problem, Nathan. A nutritional deficiency, a sleep cycle disruption, a colic symptom. We threw money at doctors, consultants, and equipment because we wanted a technical solution to an emotional disaster."

Nathan raised an eyebrow. "And what changed?"

"A temporary maid named Clara Bennett," Ethan said, a bitter, self-deprecating smile touching his lips. "She spent five minutes in this room last night, sat on the floor, and spoke Nora's name out loud to them."

Nathan’s expression shifted, his gaze dropping to the floor. The mention of Nora still carried a heavy weight between them. Nathan had been best man at their wedding; he had held Ethan up outside the hospital doors when the surgeon delivered the news.

"You banned her name from this house, Ethan," Nathan reminded him gently. "I understood why, but..."

"It was a mistake," Ethan admitted, the admission tasting like ash in his mouth. "I thought I was shielding them—shielding myself—from the pain. But all I did was build a wall around us. Clara was right. They didn't miss sleep schedules. They missed their mother. And they knew damn well she was missing from this room."

Nathan looked around the sterile, minimalist nursery. For the first time, he noticed what was missing. No photos, no warmth, no personal touches. Just white walls, expensive gadgets, and cold perfection.

"So where is this Clara now?" Nathan asked.

"I fired her at dawn."

Nathan stared at him, incredulous. "You fired the only person who figured out how to soothe your kids?"

"My pride got in the way," Ethan said, running a hand through his hair. "She challenged me. She told me I was running a fortress instead of a home. I reacted like a CEO instead of a father."

Nathan let out a short, dry laugh, shaking his head. "Classic Ethan. Well, do you know where she went?"

Ethan paused. He hadn't asked where the agency had placed her before, nor had he checked her personnel file beyond verifying her background check for security clearance. She had been hired through an exclusive high-end domestic agency in Manhattan—Sterling & Vance.

"No," Ethan said. "But I'm going to find out."

Ethan walked over to his desk in the adjoining study, picked up his encrypted phone, and dialed his chief of security, Marcus.

"Marcus," Ethan said the moment the line connected. "I need you to pull the employment and personal records of Clara Bennett from Sterling & Vance Agency. Find out where she went after leaving my estate this morning."

"Right away, Mr. Caldwell," Marcus replied.

Ethan hung up the phone and turned back to Nathan. "Now, we wait."
