Chapter 8 - Healing the Divide

Daniel found Maria in her bedroom, frantically throwing her clothes into a suitcase. Sophia was napping in her crib in the adjoining room, blissfully unaware of the chaos.
"Maria, stop! Please, stop!" Daniel cried, grabbing her hands to halt her packing.
"No, Daniel! I have to leave!" Maria sobbed, trying to pull away from him. "Your lawyer is right. I have no genetic claim to her. She is your daughter. She has your blood. If I stay here, I will always be waiting for the day your lawyers come to take her away from me. I can't live like that! I love her too much!"
Daniel didn't let go of her hands. Instead, he pulled her gently but firmly into his chest, wrapping his arms around her, holding her close until her frantic struggles subsided into quiet, trembling sobs against his shoulder.
"Listen to me, Maria," Daniel whispered into her hair, his own eyes burning with tears. "I would rather lose my entire fortune, my company, and everything I own before I let anyone hurt you or take Sophia away from you. You are her mother. Not because of a strand of DNA, but because you loved her when she was nothing but a hope. You gave her life. You are her home."
Maria looked up at him, her eyes wide and wet. "Do you mean that?"
"With my entire soul," Daniel said. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a document he had drafted himself weeks ago. "I had my personal lawyers draft this. It’s an irrevocable co-guardianship agreement. It grants you permanent, equal legal custody of Sophia, regardless of genetic origin. It cannot be overturned by any court, and it ensures that you are her legal mother forever."

Maria stared at the document, her heart swelling with an overwhelming sense of relief and love. "Daniel... why would you do this for me?"
"Because I don't want a family built on legal battles, Maria," Daniel said, his voice soft and full of emotion. "I want a family built on love. And I realize... I don't just want Sophia. I want you, too. If you’ll have me."
