Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Past

The drive to the St. Jude Fertility Clinic was silent. Daniel drove his sleek black SUV himself, refusing his usual chauffeur. Maria sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Sophia was buckled into her car seat in the back, happily singing a nursery rhyme, completely oblivious to the storm raging between the two adults in the front.

Daniel’s mind was a chaotic whirlwind of memories.

“We’ll name her Sophia if she’s a girl, Daniel,” Claire had whispered to him in the hospital bed, her voice weak but her eyes shining with hope before the chemotherapy took her strength. “A wise little girl who will look just like you.”

He had forgotten that conversation. He had buried it deep under layers of grief, work, and alcohol. But hearing the name "Sophia" coming from Maria's daughter—no, the daughter—sent shivers down his spine.

They arrived at the clinic. Daniel’s wealth and influence bypassed all administrative red tape. Within minutes, they were ushered into the private office of Dr. Jonathan Vance, the director of the clinic and the doctor who had personally overseen Claire's IVF treatments years ago.

"Daniel," Dr. Vance said, rising from his chair to shake his hand. "It has been a long time. I was deeply sorry to hear about Claire's passing. How can I help you today? And... who is this?" He gestured to Maria and the little girl holding her hand.

Daniel didn't waste time on pleasantries. He placed a folder on the doctor's desk. "Dr. Vance, I need you to run an immediate, highly confidential DNA comparison. I want to compare my DNA, and the DNA profile of my late wife Claire's frozen embryo, with this little girl, Sophia Alvarez."

Dr. Vance’s smile faded. His face turned an ashen gray. "Daniel, what are you suggesting? The embryo was destroyed per your written request three years ago."

"Was it?" Daniel’s voice was dangerously quiet. "Or did an administrative oversight occur? On October 14th, 2023, Maria Alvarez underwent an embryo transfer at this very clinic. She was a self-pay patient who received an anonymous, donated embryo due to a clinic program. But she was never supposed to receive that embryo."

Dr. Vance's hands trembled as he pulled up his computer terminal. He began typing furiously, his eyes scanning records from three years prior. The silence in the room was suffocating. Only Sophia's quiet babbling broke the tension as she played with a toy block on the carpeted floor.

As Dr. Vance kept scrolling, his face lost all remaining color. He pushed his glasses up his nose, his breathing becoming shallow.

"My God," Dr. Vance whispered, looking up with horror in his eyes. "Oh, my God."

"What is it?" Maria asked, her voice rising in panic. She grabbed Sophia, pulling her close to her chest. "Doctor, please tell me!"

"There was a system migration that week," Dr. Vance stammered, his voice shaking. "We upgraded our patient tracking database. The batch numbers... the batch numbers for the discarded biological materials and the active donor pool were off by a single digit. Maria... the embryo implanted in you wasn't from the donor catalog. It was... it belonged to Daniel and Claire Whitfield."

The words hung in the air like a heavy fog.

Daniel felt his breath catch in his throat. He looked at the little girl with the curly dark hair and the expressive eyes. She wasn't just a maid's daughter. She was his daughter. She was Claire’s daughter. She was the physical manifestation of the love he thought had been lost forever.

Beside him, Maria let out a strangled sob and collapsed into a chair, clutching Sophia as if she were about to be torn away from her forever.
