Chapter 4 - The Unraveling Truth

The revelation shattered the fragile reality of everyone involved.

Daniel stood in his study back at the mansion, staring at the DNA report that Dr. Vance had expedited. The results were black and white, undeniable, and absolute:

Paternal Probability: 99.99% (Daniel Whitfield)

Maternal Probability: 99.99% (Claire Whitfield, via posthumous genetic matching)

Sophia was his biological child. The miracle he and Claire had prayed for, cried for, and fought for had been walking through his own hallways, playing under his own roof, while he ignored her in his self-imposed prison of grief.

"She has Claire's eyes," Daniel murmured to himself, his fingers tracing the printout. "And my stubborn chin."

But then he thought of Maria.

Maria, who had carried this child for nine months. Maria, who had gone through the agony of labor, who had stayed up through sleepless nights, who had comforted Sophia through fevers, teething, and nightmares. Maria, who loved this child with every fiber of her being.

A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. Maria stepped in, her eyes red and swollen from crying. She had packed her bags; he could see them sitting by the grand staircase in the foyer.

"Are you going to take her from me?" Maria asked, her voice barely a whisper. She looked like a woman facing execution. "You are a billionaire, Mr. Whitfield. You have the best lawyers in the world. I am just a housekeeper. I can't fight you. But please... please don't let her forget me. She is my whole life."

Daniel looked at her, and for the first time in three years, the cold armor around his heart cracked completely. He saw not a maid, but a mother who had loved his daughter when he wasn't there to do it himself.

"Sit down, Maria," Daniel said gently, walking out from behind his desk. He sat in the armchair opposite her, his expression soft. "I am not going to take her from you."

Maria gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "You... you aren't?"

"How could I?" Daniel asked, his voice thick with emotion. "You gave her life. You protected her. If I took her from you, I would be destroying the very child I just found. But we cannot pretend this didn't happen. Sophia is my daughter. She is also your daughter. We have to figure out how to do this together."

May you like

"Together?" Maria whispered, searching his eyes for any sign of deceit.

"Yes," Daniel said, offering a small, reassuring smile. "For start, you are no longer my employee, Maria. You are Sophia's mother, and you will live here as an equal. We are going to raise our daughter together."
