Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Foundation

The press release dropped at exactly noon. Within minutes, the digital shockwave hit financial news outlets, gossip blogs, and morning talk shows alike. The explosive combination of a billionaire CEO, a shattered engagement, and a suppressed nanny scandal proved to be the biggest headline of the year.

True to his word, Ethan didn't hide behind PR statements or lawyers. He spent the entire afternoon in the courtyard with Oliver, teaching him the names of flowers, birds, and trees. Every time Oliver successfully pronounced a new word—tree, bird, sun—Ethan felt a surge of pride that eclipsed every corporate merger or stock market victory he had ever achieved.

Elena was right beside them, organizing outdoor games and laughing as Oliver chased a bright red rubber ball across the manicured grass.

By evening, the media storm outside the gates had begun to quiet down, replaced by a collective public outrage directed entirely at Claire Whitmore. Her socialite circle instantly distanced themselves, and her family's real estate firm issued a public apology, announcing that Claire had taken an indefinite leave of absence to “pursue personal reflection.”

Inside the study of the Hawthorne estate, Ethan sat behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing the final legal confirmations on his tablet. The door chimed softly, and Elena entered, holding a cup of herbal tea.

“You’ve been in here for three hours straight,” Elena noted, setting the tea down on the corner of his desk. “Remember what we talked about? Balance.”

Ethan looked up, smiling as he closed the tablet. He leaned back in his leather chair. “Guilty as charged. I suppose old habits die hard. But I’m trying to learn from the best.”

Elena leaned against the edge of the desk, crossing her arms with a playful smile. “Is that so? Because last time I checked, the head of this household is supposed to take a break after dinner.”

“The head of this household?” Ethan raised an eyebrow, a teasing glint in his eye. “I thought you were running the household now.”

“I’m managing the domestic side,” Elena corrected smoothly. “You’re managing the corporate side. But fatherhood? That’s a joint venture.”

Ethan felt his breath catch in his throat. The way she said it—so naturally, so completely at home—sent a warm, unfamiliar ripple through his chest. He reached out, gently taking her hand resting on the desk. Elena didn't pull away; instead, her fingers intertwined naturally with his.

“A joint venture,” Ethan repeated softly, his gaze locking onto hers. “I think that’s the best business proposal I’ve ever heard.”

Before Elena could reply, soft pattering footsteps echoed down the hallway outside the study door. A moment later, Oliver toddled into the room, holding a battered stuffed bear in one hand. He stopped at the edge of the rug, looked up at Ethan and Elena holding hands, and let out a bright, cheerful giggle.

“Family,” Oliver said clearly, pointing a chubby finger straight at the two of them.

Ethan and Elena stared at the toddler in absolute amazement, before bursting into laughter. Ethan scooped Oliver up into his arms, pulling him close, while Elena wrapped her arms around both of them.
