Chapter 7 - The Morning After the Storm

The morning sun broke over the Hawthorne estate, casting sharp golden rays across the manicured lawns and the polished marble fountains. True to Ethan’s prediction, a cluster of black-and-yellow news vans and reporters had parked outside the iron security gates, their cameras poised like hungry wolves waiting for a scandal.
Inside the grand kitchen, however, the atmosphere was serene.
The smell of freshly brewed coffee and toasted sourdough filled the air. At the oak breakfast table, Oliver sat in his high chair, happily spooning oatmeal into his mouth while babbling soft, indistinct syllables that made Ethan smile from across the table.
“More fruit, buddy?” Elena asked, sliding a small bowl of fresh blueberries toward the toddler.
“Blue!” Oliver said clearly, pointing a sticky finger at the bowl.
Ethan froze, his coffee mug hovering halfway to his mouth. He looked across the table at Elena, his eyes wide with astonishment.
Elena beamed, laughing softly. “Did you hear that? That’s his second word in less than twelve hours.”
“Blue,” Ethan repeated, a massive smile breaking across his face—the first genuine, unforced smile he had worn in years. He stood up, walked over to his son, and scooped him out of the high chair, lifting him high into the air. Oliver giggled, his tiny hands grabbing playfully at Ethan’s hair. “That’s right, buddy! Blue! You’re getting the hang of this!”
Just then, Marcus, the head of security, stepped into the kitchen, holding a thick tablet.
“Mr. Hawthorne,” Marcus said respectfully, nodding to Elena before addressing Ethan. “The reporters are still swarming the gates. They’re asking for a statement regarding last night's incident with Miss Whitmore. Legal team is standing by.”
Ethan set Oliver back down gently on his feet, handing him a wooden toy truck to play with on the rug. The playful warmth in Ethan's eyes instantly vanished, replaced by the cool, resolute authority of a billionaire CEO.
“Tell the legal team to draft a formal press release,” Ethan instructed, his voice crisp. “Attach the security archives from the nursery showing Claire’s unlawful termination of our nanny and her psychological harassment. Send it to every major news outlet by noon.”
Marcus blinked in surprise. “Are you sure, sir? That will completely destroy Miss Whitmore’s reputation and invite an immediate media frenzy.”
“She brought this on herself the moment she harmed my son and lied to my face,” Ethan replied coldly. “I will not protect someone who weaponized my child's silence for her own insecurity. Furthermore, I want a restraining order filed against her immediately, preventing her from coming within five miles of this estate.”
“Right away, sir,” Marcus said, turning sharply on his heel and exiting the kitchen.
Elena walked over, placing a warm hand on Ethan’s arm. “Are you sure about releasing the footage? It’s going to be a very public storm.”
May you like
Ethan looked down at her hand on his arm, then up into her steady, reassuring eyes. For the first time, he felt completely anchored.
“Let it storm,” Ethan said softly. “The truth is out, my son is talking, and for the first time in my life, my house actually feels like a home. Let the world see whatever it wants. We’re moving forward.”
