Chapter 5 - The Reconstruction of a Home

The heavy oak doors of the ballroom slammed shut behind Claire, cutting off her distant screams and leaving behind a stunned, breathless silence. The glittering crowd of investors and socialites stood frozen, unsure whether to applaud, flee, or offer condolences.
Ethan didn't care about any of them. He didn't care about the stock prices, the real estate portfolios, or the glittering society pages that would undoubtedly crucify his name tomorrow morning. His entire focus was locked onto the two figures standing near the kitchen entrance: Elena, and his son, Oliver.
Slowly, Ethan crossed the remaining distance between them. The weight of two years of guilt seemed to press down on his shoulders with every step. When he reached them, he stopped, looking down at his son.
Oliver turned his head, his dark eyes meeting Ethan’s. There was no fear in them, only a quiet, questioning innocence.
“Can I… can I hold him?” Ethan asked, his voice cracking slightly, betraying the iron facade he usually wore like armor.
Elena didn't hesitate. She carefully shifted Oliver into Ethan’s arms.
For the first time in two years, Oliver didn't stiffen or look away. As Ethan wrapped his arms around the boy, holding him close to his chest, Oliver reached out a small, warm hand and pressed his tiny palm against Ethan’s cheek.
A single tear broke free from Ethan’s eye, tracing a hot path down his face. “I’m sorry, buddy,” Ethan whispered, his voice choked with emotion. “I’m so, so sorry. Daddy didn't know.”
Oliver didn't say words this time, but he let out a soft, contented sigh, resting his head against his father's shoulder.
Ethan looked up at Elena, who was standing quietly beside them, her hands clasped in front of her plain housekeeping uniform. Her eyes were red-rimmed, but she offered a small, understanding smile.
“You came back,” Ethan said, his voice steadying. “Even after what she did to you... why did you come back as a maid?”
“Because of him,” Elena replied simply, nodding toward Oliver. “The agency called last week saying they needed emergency domestic staff for a major estate event here. I knew it was your house. I knew Miss Whitmore was gone from the day-to-day management because her name wasn't on the schedule anymore. I had to see if he was okay. I couldn't just pretend he didn't exist.”
Ethan swallowed hard, feeling a profound wave of gratitude and humility wash over him. He had spent millions on medical specialists, therapists, and high-tech gadgets, searching everywhere for a solution to his son's silence, completely blind to the simple truth sitting right in front of him: Oliver didn't need a corporate empire or a socialite stepmother. He needed love, consistency, and the person who had cared for his soul since he was an infant.
“You aren't a maid, Elena,” Ethan said firmly, straightening his posture. “You never were. You are Oliver’s nanny—and starting tonight, you are the head of this household, if you're willing to take the position back.”
Elena looked surprised, her eyes widening slightly. “Mr. Hawthorne, after everything that happened tonight... are you sure? The gossipers outside won't make it easy. Your reputation—”
May you like
“My reputation means nothing if my son doesn't have a voice,” Ethan interrupted, his voice carrying the absolute conviction of a man who had finally found his true North. “My home was empty because I let the wrong person guard the door. I want to fix that. If you're willing to stay, name your terms.”
Elena looked down at Oliver, who was sleepily blinking his dark eyes against Ethan’s shoulder. She offered a soft, genuine smile and nodded. “I’ll stay, Mr. Hawthorne. Oliver needs me. And... I think you need some help running this house, too.”
