Chapter 3 - The Fractured Alibi

The murmurs among the guests swelled into an undeniable wave of gossip. Flashbulbs from hidden smartphones clicked in the dim corners of the room, capturing every nuance of the drama unfolding beneath the crystal chandeliers. Ethan ignored them all. His entire world had shrunk down to the space between himself, Claire, and the woman holding his silent son.

“Ethan, this is insane,” Claire stammered, her fingers clawing frantically at the fabric of her white gown. “You’re letting a domestic employee manipulate you during our engagement party. Think about what you’re doing! Send her away, let’s cut the cake, and we can deal with this ridiculous background check issue tomorrow morning.”

“Tomorrow isn't soon enough,” Ethan replied, his voice dangerously low. He turned back to Elena. “You said Miss Whitmore hired you. But then why did you leave? And why did you come back three days ago as a maid?”

Elena shifted Oliver slightly, her arms cradling him with a natural, maternal ease that made Ethan’s heart ache with a strange mixture of guilt and jealousy. “I didn't leave by choice, Mr. Hawthorne. One evening, about six months ago, Miss Whitmore came into the nursery while you were still at the downtown office. She told me my services were no longer required. She handed me an envelope of cash, told me to pack my bags immediately, and threatened that if I ever tried to contact you or come near Oliver again, she would ensure I never worked another day in this city. She had powerful connections; I couldn't risk my family's livelihood.”

“That’s an absolute fabrication!” Claire yelled, her voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings. “Ethan, look at her clothes, look at her status! She’s a disgruntled worker trying to ruin the happiest night of our lives! Security, drag her out or I swear I’ll sue this entire estate!”

The guards looked uncertainly at Ethan, waiting for a command.

Ethan didn't give one. Instead, he reached into his tuxedo jacket pocket, pulled out his sleek black smartphone, and tapped the screen a few times. He didn't look at Claire as he spoke.

“My estate runs on a closed-circuit security system,” Ethan said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. “Every hallway, every room, every entry point is recorded and stored on an encrypted server in the basement. It retains footage for twelve months.”

Claire stopped breathing. Her hands flew to her throat, her manicured fingers digging into her skin.

“If Elena was living in my house as a nanny for months,” Ethan continued, his eyes finally locking onto Claire’s panicked gaze, “then the cameras in the west wing nursery will show her walking those halls every single day. They will show whether you hired her, whether you fired her, and whether you threatened her.”

The silence that followed was absolute. Even the string quartet in the gallery had stopped playing, watching the scene unfold like a tragedy on a stage.

Claire’s knees buckled slightly, but she caught herself against a nearby marble pillar. The polished veneer of her socialite perfection had completely shattered, leaving behind a terrified, cornered stranger.

“You… you wouldn't check the archives during our party,” Claire whispered, her voice trembling.

“Watch me,” Ethan said, lifting his phone. He dialed a direct extension to his head of security. “Marcus, patch the west wing nursery archives from six months ago to the main ballroom projector. Do it now.”

“No!” Claire shrieked, lunging forward to swat the phone from Ethan’s hand.

The phone clattered onto the marble floor, sliding a few feet away. But it was already too late. Above them, the motorized projection screen hidden in the ornate ceiling began to descend, humming softly as it unfurled over the center of the ballroom.

The guests gasped, stepping back to clear a path. Elena stood her ground, holding Oliver tightly against her chest, her eyes fixed on the descending screen.

Ethan bent down, picked up his phone, and stared coldly at the woman he had trusted with his home and his son.
