Chapter 2 - The Shadows Behind the Silk

The sudden silence in the ballroom felt heavier than the music had moments before. Several wealthy investors shifted uncomfortably, whispering behind crystal flutes, while others stared in morbid fascination at the strange tableau near the kitchen doors. A multi-millionaire real estate tycoon, a grieving single father, a prominent socialite bride-to-be, and a humble maid holding a toddler's small hand.

Ethan felt a cold drop of sweat trace the line of his jaw. He looked down at his son. Oliver was not looking at him, nor was he looking at Claire. His dark eyes remained fixed entirely on Elena, a soft, contented expression settling over his small face—an expression Ethan had spent two agonizing years trying to evoke, with zero success.

“Explain yourself,” Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the sharp authority that commanded corporate boardrooms. “Who are you, really? The agency said you started three days ago.”

Elena swallowed hard, her eyes darting briefly toward the glittering chandelier above before returning to Ethan. “The agency sent my paperwork three days ago, Mr. Hawthorne. But I didn't just walk into your life this week. I was here long before that.”

“That is a complete lie!” Claire stepped forward, her silk dress rustling aggressively. Her voice was shrill, lacking its usual polished cadence. “Ethan, don't listen to this woman! She’s probably a deranged fan, a stalker who somehow got past the security screening. Look at her—she’s a common maid trying to extort money from you!”

“I am not a stalker, Miss Whitmore,” Elena said quietly, her voice unwavering despite the hostility radiating from Claire. She gently picked Oliver up, and to Ethan’s absolute shock, the boy buried his face into the crook of Elena’s neck, wrapping his tiny arms tightly around her. Oliver had never—not once—allowed Claire to hold him like that without crying or squirming away.

Claire noticed it too. Her face flushed a dangerous shade of crimson. “Give me that child! He doesn't know you! You've bewitched him or—or drugged him!”

“Quiet, Claire,” Ethan commanded, his tone sharp enough to stop her in her tracks. He stared at Elena. “If you were here before, who hired you? Why don't I remember you?”

“Because you were never home, Mr. Hawthorne,” Elena said, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “You were building an empire. You were working eighteen-hour days, flying from Tokyo to New York, trying to cope with the tragedy of losing your wife. And while you were gone, running yourself into the ground, I was the one rocking Oliver to sleep every night in the nursery. I was the one teaching him how to crawl. I was his nanny, hired directly by you—or so I thought—months ago.”

Ethan’s mind spun. “That’s impossible. My head of household, Mrs. Gable, manages all domestic staff. She never mentioned a nanny named Elena.”

“Mrs. Gable didn't hire me,” Elena corrected softly. “Miss Whitmore did.”

All eyes whipped toward Claire. The socialite's face had gone completely pale, the foundation looking stark against her drained skin.

“She’s lying!” Claire shrieked, panic finally cracking her composure. “Ethan, look at me! Do you trust me, or do you trust a random servant off the street? Security! Get this woman out of my sight right now!”

Two burly private security guards in black suits stepped forward from the perimeter of the ballroom, their earpieces glowing faintly in the dimming mood lighting. They reached for Elena’s arms.

“Don't touch her,” Ethan said. His voice was terrifyingly calm.

The guards froze mid-motion, looking between Ethan and Claire.

Ethan turned his gaze slowly to his fiancée. The woman he had proposed to not an hour ago. The woman who had slept in his bed, managed his household, and planned every detail of his son's daily life. A cold realization began to pool in the pit of his stomach, freezing his blood.

“Claire,” Ethan said softly, stepping closer to her. “Tell me why she was here.”
