Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the Sun

While Emma recovered, the legal storm broke over Seattle.
Equipped with the audio recordings, the stolen corporate files, and the toxicology data, federal agents raided the headquarters of Aegis Bio-Tech. Julian Croft and three senior executive directors were arrested on charges of fraud, distribution of toxic substances, and obstruction of justice.
The criminal charges against Michael were thoroughly reviewed. Given that he was manipulated by Aegis and acted under extreme distress to save his child, and with the help of Detective Marcus’s testimony, the severe felony charges were dropped in exchange for community service and probation.
Most miraculous of all, a team of top neuro-genetic specialists from Johns Hopkins reviewed Emma’s complete DNA sequencing after the crisis.
They made a startling discovery: the initial private clinic that diagnosed Emma with Niemann-Pick Type C had made a catastrophic lab cross-contamination error.
Emma never had the fatal genetic disease. She was entirely healthy.
Michael’s desperate, illegal crusade had been triggered by a tragic medical mistake, manipulated by a corrupt corporation—but Emma was safe. Her body was completely cleared of the toxin, her organs repaired by her young, resilient body.
When Michael was released, he came straight to the hospital. He stood at the door of Emma's room, hesitant, filled with guilt, afraid to look me in the eye.
I looked at him—a man who had made terrible, dangerous choices out of blind, terrifying love for our daughter.

I walked over to the door and opened my arms. Michael broke down in tears, collapsing into the embrace, begging for forgiveness.
"We survived it," I whispered into his shoulder, crying with him. "We have a lot to heal, Michael... but we are going to do it together."
