Chapter 10 - Dawn After the Storm

One year later.
Spring had returned to our quiet Seattle suburb. The cherry blossoms along our street were in full, magnificent bloom, dropping soft pink petals across the damp pavement under a clear, brilliant blue sky.
Inside our kitchen, the coffee maker hissed happily. The smell of fresh pancakes filled the air.
Michael was sitting at the kitchen table, laughing as he helped Emma with her science fair project—a model of the solar system made of painted Styrofoam balls.
"Dad, Jupiter is way bigger than that!" Emma giggled, nudging his shoulder.
"Hey, give me a break, I'm an accountant, not an astronomer!" Michael joked, his face bright, refreshed, and free of the heavy shadows that had once consumed him. He had taken a new job as a financial auditor for an environmental non-profit, dedicating his work to transparency and safety.
I walked over and placed a plate of pancakes in front of them, wrapping my arms around both of their shoulders.
Emma looked up at me, her cheeks rosy, her eyes bright and sparkling with life and full health. She had earned an A on her math test that morning, and her laughter filled the room like warm sunshine.
"What are you thinking about, Mom?" she asked, smiling.
I kissed the top of her head, feeling the soft warmth of her hair, and then looked at Michael, whose hand reached over to gently hold mine.

"I was just thinking," I said softly, looking out the window at the sunny street, "that the storm is finally over."
We had walked through the deepest darkness, faced down secrets that nearly tore us apart, and fought for our child’s life. But sitting here together in the morning light, listening to my daughter’s laughter, I knew our family was whole again—healed, restored, and forever safe.
