Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Hunt

Emma’s kidneys were beginning to fail. The standard hospital antidote was failing because Dr. Vance didn't have the exact chemical structure of the degraded Compound X-12.
"Without the raw molecular formula of the degraded batch," Dr. Vance informed me, his face grim, "we are treating the symptoms in the dark. Her liver and kidneys cannot sustain this stress for another twenty-four hours."
Michael was in police custody, facing federal charges of chemical theft and endangerment. The police were working through legal channels to subpoena Aegis Bio-Tech, but corporate lawyers were stalling, claiming proprietary trade secrets.
"They're stalling until she dies," I realized with cold, terrifying clarity. "If Emma dies, the evidence of their toxic trial drug dies with her, and they can pin everything on Michael as a rogue employee."
I took off my hospital badge, walked into the locker room, and grabbed my jacket.
I wasn't just a nurse anymore. I was a mother whose daughter was dying.
I called Detective Marcus. "I know where Michael kept his personal research backup drive. It's not at our house. It's in his safety deposit box at the Seattle Central Bank."

"Sarah, stay out of this, let law enforcement handle it—" Marcus began.
"She doesn't have twenty-four hours, Marcus!" I screamed into the phone. "Meet me there, or I'm breaking into that vault myself!"
