Chapter 5 - Fractured Glass

The revelation shattered my world into a thousand jagged pieces. Michael was not a cold-blooded murderer, but his desperate, arrogant attempt to act as a rogue scientist had poisoned our daughter.

"You should have told me!" I sobbed, sinking to the floor of the interview room. "I am a nurse! I am her mother! We could have gone to specialists in Boston, in Europe! How could you keep this from me?!"

"I was terrified you'd stop me!" Michael cried, kneeling beside me, though the officer stepped in to keep us apart. "I thought I could fix it! I thought I could cure her before you ever had to carry the pain of her diagnosis!"

The tragedy was compounded by a darker truth: the police found that Aegis Bio-Tech had actively lied about the stability of the compound. The company knew Compound X-12 degraded into a dangerous neurotoxin when exposed to ambient temperature, yet they had concealed the reports to protect their stock price.

When Michael took the drug, he was carrying a ticking time bomb—a bomb manufactured by a corrupt corporate executive named Julian Croft, the CEO of Aegis Bio-Tech.
