Chapter 9 - The First Cry and the Pale King

Adrian stared at the tiny bundle in Dr. Helen’s arms, and for the second time in his life, the invincible mafia boss went completely pale.
His breath caught in his throat. His knees felt suddenly weak beneath him.
Dr. Helen gently stepped forward, placing the newborn directly onto Maya’s chest.
Maya laughed through her happy tears, her hands trembling as she cradled the tiny infant against her heart. The baby had a shock of dark hair, tiny button nose, and small, perfectly formed fingers that immediately curled into tight little fists.
“Look at her, Adrian,” Maya whispered, looking up at her husband with shining eyes. “She’s perfect.”
Adrian slowly reached out, his large, calloused finger gently brushing the infant’s impossibly soft cheek. The baby stopped crying instantly, turning instinctively toward the warmth of his touch and grasping his finger with her minuscule hand.
A tear—the first Adrian Cole had shed in over twenty years—slipped down his cheek, cutting a clean path through the soot and dust on his face.
“She has your eyes, Maya,” he choked out, his voice thick with overwhelming emotion as he pulled both of them into his arms, burying his face against Maya’s shoulder. “She has your beautiful, brave eyes.”

Maya rested her head against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her cheek. The war was over. The shadows had receded. For the first time in their lives, there were no secrets, no hidden threats, and no divorce papers waiting on a desk.
There was only the quiet warmth of a winter morning, the soft breathing of their newborn daughter, and a family that could never be broken again.
