Chapter 5 - The Spider in the Web

Three days passed in a tense, suffocating bubble of isolation inside the lakeside estate. Outside, winter winds howled across Lake Michigan, whipping whitecaps against the rocky shore. Inside, the mansion was a fortress of silent efficiency, patroled round-the-clock by Adrian’s most trusted loyalists.
Maya spent her time in the master suite, reading, resting, and occasionally looking out the reinforced windows at the endless gray horizon. True to his word, Adrian rarely left her side for long. When he wasn't taking secure encrypted calls in his makeshift command office down the hall, he was sitting with her, reading legal documents or simply talking about the future—a future they had both thought was dead and buried.
On the fourth morning, Grant Mercer knocked quietly on the master bedroom door before stepping inside with a thick manila folder tucked under his arm.
Adrian, who was sitting in an armchair reading a book to Maya while she rested against the pillows, looked up instantly.
“Report,” Adrian said, setting the book aside.
“We found the leak, Boss,” Grant said, his expression grim as he placed the folder on the bedside table. “It wasn't anyone in our Chicago detail. It originated from the private medical clinic in Atlanta where Mrs. Maya registered for her prenatal care three months ago.”
Maya sat up sharply, clutching the blanket to her chest. “That’s impossible! Dr. Evans runs a secure, boutique clinic. Her staff is vetted.”
“Dr. Evans herself is clean,” Grant corrected gently. “Her billing administrator, however, was carrying massive gambling debts tied to a shell corporation owned directly by one of Viktor Vance’s front men. She sold your file—including your address, ultrasound appointments, and insurance data—for forty thousand dollars.”
Adrian stood up slowly. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. He didn't raise his voice, but the quiet deadliness in his demeanor made even Grant shift uncomfortably.
“Where is she now?” Adrian asked.
“In our basement holding room,” Grant replied.
“And Viktor?”
“Our scouts tracked his encrypted satellite comms this morning. He’s holed up in a converted industrial warehouse down by the South Chicago rail yards. He thinks you’re still reeling from the ambush at headquarters. He’s planning a final push tonight.”
Adrian turned his gaze toward Maya. She was staring at the manila folder, her face pale, the realization of how close she had come to disaster sinking deep into her bones.
“Maya,” Adrian said softly, walking over to the bed and sitting down beside her. He reached out, gently cupping her cheek with his warm palm. “It ends tonight.”
“You’re going to him?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
“If I don't hunt him down first, he will keep hunting us,” Adrian said, his green eyes burning with fierce determination. “I built this empire with my bare hands, and I will tear it down brick by brick if that’s what it takes to ensure nobody ever threatens you or our daughter again.”
“Be careful, Adrian,” she whispered, her hand rising to cover his wrist. The anger and resentment of the past three months seemed to melt away, leaving only the raw, undeniable truth of what they meant to each other. “I didn't get you back just to lose you now.”

Adrian leaned down and pressed a deep, tender kiss to her forehead.
“I am entirely indestructible, Maya,” he murmured against her skin. “Because I have something worth living for.”
