Chapter 7 - The Longest Night

Back at the lakeside estate, Maya sat propped up against the pillows in the master bedroom, staring at the digital clock on the bedside table. It was 3:15 AM.
Every tick of the second hand felt like a hammer blow against her chest. She had watched the security monitors from the command desk earlier, seeing the flashes of tactical gear and hearing the encoded radio chatter, but since the raid concluded, radio silence had fallen over the compound.
Please be safe, she chanted silently in her mind, her hands resting protectively over her swollen belly. Please come back to us.
Suddenly, the heavy front door downstairs opened and closed. Heavy, purposeful footsteps echoed up the grand staircase and down the corridor.
The bedroom door clicked open, and Adrian stepped inside.
He looked exhausted. His tactical vest was dusted with snow, a small graze marked his left cheekbone, and his dark hair was slightly damp from the freezing night air. But as his green eyes locked onto Maya sitting wide-awake in the bed, all the tension drained out of him.
“You’re still awake,” he said, his voice rough as he walked over to the bed.
“I couldn't sleep,” Maya whispered, her eyes scanning him for any serious injuries. “Are you okay? What happened?”
“It’s over,” Adrian said softly, sinking down onto the edge of the mattress and taking her small hand in his large, calloused one. “Viktor is gone. The Syndicate is dismantled, and our home is safe again. No one will ever hurt you or our daughter.”
A sudden, overwhelming wave of relief broke through Maya’s emotional armor. The tears she had held back for three long months finally spilled over, rolling down her cheeks.
“I was so scared, Adrian,” she sobbed softly, leaning forward into his embrace.
Adrian wrapped his arms tightly around her, burying his face in her hair, holding her as if he would never let her go.
“I know, my love. I know,” he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to her crown. “I’m sorry it took me so long to fix this. I’m sorry I ever let you walk out that door.”
As they held each other in the quiet sanctuary of the bedroom, a sudden, powerful contraction gripped Maya’s abdomen—far stronger and sharper than anything she had felt before.
She gasped, her fingers digging fiercely into Adrian’s shoulders.
“Adrian...” she breathed out, her eyes widening in sudden realization.

Adrian pulled back instantly, terror flashing across his face. “What is it? Are you okay?”
“The... the baby,” Maya panted, a bead of sweat forming on her forehead as a wave of heat washed over her. “Adrian, my water just broke. It’s time.”
