Chapter 10 - A New Dawn in Chicago

Six months later, the morning sun rose over a peaceful, golden Chicago skyline. The gray winter chill had long since given way to the vibrant warmth of a bright summer, and the river sparkled like polished sapphire beneath the downtown towers.
Inside a sunlit, elegant penthouse overlooking the lake, Maya Cole stood by the kitchen island, humming a soft melody as she spooned organic fruit puree into a small bowl.
From the living room came the sound of deep, rumbling laughter mixed with high-pitched, joyful squeals.
Maya walked into the living room with a smile playing across her lips. There, sitting cross-legged on the plush white rug, was Chicago’s most feared former crime boss—now wearing a mismatched polka-dot bow on his head—happily playing peek-a-boo with a six-month-old baby girl who had her mother’s fierce spirit and her father’s striking green eyes.
Adrian looked up as Maya approached, catching her reflection in the glass balcony door. He gently set the rattle down, scooped little Elena into his arms, and stood up to meet his wife.
“Someone is very energetic this morning,” Adrian murmured, pressing a warm kiss to Maya’s cheek as she stepped into his embrace.
“She gets it from her father,” Maya teased, wrapping her arms around both of them.
Adrian smiled, resting his chin on top of Maya’s head while holding their daughter securely against his chest. His old life in the underground Syndicate was a ghost of the past—he had handed over the reins to trusted civic reformers, turning his vast empire into legitimate real estate investments and philanthropic foundations designed to keep the city safe.
He didn't need fear anymore. He didn't need bullets or bodyguards standing outside closed doors.
He had everything that mattered right here in his arms.
“Are you still thinking about that trip to Atlanta next month?” Adrian asked softly, looking down into Maya’s eyes.

“Only to visit my sister,” Maya replied with a bright, teasing smile. “Because my permanent home—and my favorite husband—are right here in Chicago.”
Adrian pulled them both closer, looking out at the sunlit city stretching endlessly beneath them, knowing that the darkest night of their lives had only led them to the brightest dawn they could have ever dreamed of.
