Chapter 6 - The Verdict and the Sentence

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.

When the court reconvened, the tension in the room was so thick it felt tangible. Arthur sat with his head bowed, his hands locked tightly in his lap. Rachel was quietly weeping into her handcuffs. Mark stared blankly at the defense table.

The judge adjusted her glasses, looked down at the documents before her, and spoke in a clear, uncompromising voice.

"On the counts of aggravated assault, battery, conspiracy, child endangerment, and systemic financial fraud, this court finds the defendants—Arthur Vance, Mark Vance, and Rachel Vance—guilty on all charges."

A collective murmur rippled through the gallery.

The judge continued, her tone severe.

"The level of brutality, premeditated cruelty, and lack of remorse demonstrated by the defendants is appalling. Abuse of family members under the protection of a private home is a crime that strikes at the very foundation of society."

She paused, looking directly at Arthur.

"Arthur Vance, for the crimes of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and financial fraud, I sentence you to twelve years in federal and state penitentiary, with no possibility of parole for the first eight years."

Arthur let out a choking sob, burying his face in his cuffed hands.

"Mark Vance, for complicity in assault, obstruction of justice, and corporate embezzlement, you are sentenced to eight years."

Mark slumped forward, his forehead hitting the wooden table with a dull thud.

"Rachel Vance, for child endangerment, conspiracy to commit assault, and perjury during police interrogation, you are sentenced to six years."

Rachel shrieked, breaking down into hysterical sobs as the female bailiff stepped forward to grab her arms. "No! No, please! My son! I want my son!" Her cries echoed through the courtroom as she was dragged away, followed by Mark and finally my father, who didn't look back once as he was led out in chains.

The trial was over. The nightmare had reached its legal conclusion.

As the courtroom emptied out, Julian and I remained seated for a moment, letting the silence wash over us. The oppressive weight that had shadowed my entire life—the invisible leash my family had kept me on—was finally, permanently severed.

"It's over," Julian whispered, wrapping his arm around my shoulders and pressing a kiss to my temple.

"It's over," I agreed, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across my face for the first time in years. "We're free."
