Chapter 4 - Healing and Retribution

The sterile scent of the private hospital suite was a stark contrast to the chaotic terror of my family's home. Soft classical music played from a discreet speaker, and the sunlight streamed gently through wide windows overlooking the city skyline.
I sat propped up against a mountain of plush pillows, a soft bandage wrapped around my head where my father's crutch had struck, and my injured leg resting comfortably in a specialized orthopedic brace.
Julian sat in a leather armchair beside the bed, meticulously peeling an apple with a small silver knife. Despite the multi-billion-dollar empire he ran, right now, he looked like a man whose entire universe revolved around making sure I was safe.
"How is your head?" he asked softly, handing me a small, perfectly cut slice of apple on a porcelain plate.
"It still throbs when I move too fast," I admitted, taking a small bite. "But the pain is... manageable. Thank you, Julian. For coming... for saving me."
Julian set the knife down, stood up, and sat on the edge of the mattress, taking my hand in his warm palms. His thumb gently stroked the back of my hand. "I told you on our wedding day that I would never let anyone hurt you again, Clara. I failed today by being ten minutes late. It will never happen again."
"You couldn't have known they would go that far," I murmured, looking down. "I kept the truth from them for so long because I wanted them to love me for me, not for your money. But no matter what I did, no matter how much money I sent them from my own design firm's profits, they always treated me like dirt because I had a limp from the car accident."
Julian’s eyes flashed with fierce protectiveness. "And now they are going to pay for every single tear they ever caused you. My legal team isn't just stopping at the corporate bankruptcy."
"What else are you doing?" I asked, looking up at him.
"Arthur’s company wasn't just failing due to market conditions," Julian explained calmly. "My forensic accountants went through their ledgers last week. Your father and your brother have been embezzling funds from supplier accounts and committing tax fraud for years. The police have all the evidence. They're looking at serious prison time—not just a slap on the wrist."
I let out a slow breath. A part of me—the old, foolish part that still craved parental approval—felt a pang of sorrow. But the rest of me, the part that had bled on that hardwood floor while her family watched with cold indifference, felt an overwhelming sense of justice.
"And Rachel?" I asked.
"Rachel tried to pin the entire assault on Arthur during her police interrogation," Julian smiled grimly. "She claimed Arthur forced her to push you. But the security footage clearly shows her smiling as she shoved you into the cake. Child endangerment, assault, and conspiracy. She's facing prison time as well, and Child Protective Services has already placed little Leo in temporary protective custody with a qualified, stable foster family while custody evaluations are conducted."
I closed my eyes, letting the weight of the news settle over me. For years, I had walked on eggshells around them, enduring their insults, their belittling remarks, and their constant demands for money, all under the guise of "family obligation." Now, the illusion was shattered forever.

"What happens to us now, Julian?" I asked softly.
Julian smiled, leaning down to press a gentle, lingering kiss to my forehead. "Now, my love, we start our real life. No shadows, no hiding. You are going to heal, your design studio is going to expand globally with my backing, and we are going to leave this city behind for somewhere peaceful."
