Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the Mastermind

The man standing in the doorway was Julian Vance.

To anyone else in the city, Julian was known as a ruthless billionaire real estate tycoon, a man who owned half the skyscrapers downtown and whose name commanded absolute deference in the corporate world. But to the people standing in this living room, he was something far more terrifying: my husband, whom my family had spent the last three years believing was a penniless, disabled nobody whom I had married out of pure defiance.

My father, Arthur, stood frozen, his mouth half-open, the metal crutch slipping from his trembling fingers and clattering against the hardwood floor right next to my bleeding head.

"J-Julian?" Arthur stammered, color entirely draining from his ruddy face. "What... what are you doing here? How did you—"

Julian didn't answer him immediately. His cold, dark eyes swept across the room, taking in every single detail. He saw my brother Mark looking away in cowardice, my mother shrinking back against the sofa, and Rachel trembling as she tried to back toward the kitchen. Finally, his gaze locked onto me, curled in a pool of my own blood with a gash on my head and a bruised shoulder.

The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. The heavy, oppressive silence was broken only by the soft, terrified whimpers of my nephew Leo, who had finally realized something terrible was happening.

Julian took a slow, measured step across the threshold. His tailored Italian leather shoes clicked against the floor, each step sounding like a death knell to my family's collective conscience.

"I was told my wife was attending a family gathering," Julian’s voice was dangerously quiet, smooth as silk, yet vibrating with a lethal, suppressed fury. "Instead, I arrive to find her bleeding on the floor, beaten with a medical device by the man who gave her life."

"Julian, wait, you don't understand!" Rachel blurted out, her voice pitching up in panic as she forced a terrified, unconvincing smile. "It was just a misunderstanding! Clara tripped over her own feet, she ruined Leo's birthday cake, and—and she was being hysterical—"

"Shut your mouth," Julian said. It wasn't a shout. It was a command delivered with such absolute authority that Rachel snapped her jaw shut instantly, choking on her remaining words.

Julian dropped to one knee beside me, completely ignoring the ruined cake and the expensive rug. His expression of icy detachment melted away, replaced by a raw, agonizing tenderness that I had never seen anyone else witness.

"Clara," he whispered, his hands hovering over me as if afraid that touching me wrong would cause more pain. "Look at me, sweetheart. Where does it hurt?"

"My... my head, Julian," I managed to whisper, tears finally breaking free and mixing with the blood on my cheek. "My leg... he took my crutch..."

A muscle twitched in Julian's jaw. He gently slid his arm under my shoulders, lifting me with incredible care, pressing me against his chest. When he stood back up, holding me bridal-style, his eyes swept back toward Arthur.

If looks could kill, my father would have burst into flames right there on the spot.

"You have exactly three seconds to explain why my wife, the sole reason your failing family business still exists, is bleeding on your floor," Julian said, his voice dropping to a terrifying register.

Arthur swallowed hard, his knees visibly shaking. "Julian... we... we didn't know she was your wife. She... she never told us you were wealthy! She said you were a poor clerk!"

May you like

Julian let out a cold, humorless laugh that sent a shiver through every person in the room. "You never bothered to ask, Arthur. And now, you are going to pay the ultimate price for your blindness."

Before Arthur could utter another word, the sound of heavy boots echoed from the front hallway, and three uniformed police officers, accompanied by two men in sharp black suits carrying briefcases, swarmed into the house.
