Chapter 8 - The Estate Transformed

Six months later, the Moretti estate looked entirely different.

The heavy, iron gates that had once barred the outside world were now frequently open to welcome neighborhood friends, business associates who respected Julian’s legitimate transition into philanthropic investments, and—most importantly—laughter.

The dark, gloomy draperies of the west wing had been replaced with light, airy linens that let the golden afternoon sun flood into Julian’s office. The framed photographs of hard-eyed syndicate bosses on the walls were now outnumbered by fingerpaintings, school portraits, and framed snapshots of Ellie learning how to ride a bicycle on the estate's paved courtyard.

Julian no longer relied entirely on his wheelchair. Though he still used it for long distances or heavy rehabilitation days, he could walk with the aid of a cane—a testament to his iron willpower and Dr. Bennett’s relentless therapy regimen.

On a crisp autumn Saturday, the sprawling back lawn of the estate was filled with color and sound. Long wooden tables were draped in white cloth, laden with food, flowers, and an absurd number of baked goods.

Ellie, now four years old and wearing a bright red dress that matched her favorite sneakers, ran across the grass chasing a golden retriever puppy—the very puppy Julian had promised her months earlier.

Julian stood beneath the shade of a massive oak tree, leaning slightly on his cane as he watched them play. He wore a crisp white button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking more like a relaxed family man than the former feared kingpin of Lakehurst.

Claire walked up beside him, handing him a glass of sparkling cider. She leaned against his shoulder, following his gaze toward their daughter.

"Penny for your thoughts, Mr. Moretti," Claire teased softly.

Julian took a sip of the cider, smiling as he wrapped his free arm around her waist, pulling her close. "I was just thinking about how a broken cookie changed the entire course of my life."

Claire chuckled, looking up at him with deep affection. "You were a grumpy, stubborn recluse who needed saving, and she was a toddler with no respect for personal boundaries. It was a match made in heaven."

"Truest thing you've ever said," Julian agreed, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head.
