Chapter 5 - Gathering the Storm

"Midnight?" Julian repeated, his voice eerily calm. He unlocked the drawer of his desk with a slow, deliberate movement. "Viktor, you always were an impatient fool."
Viktor chuckled, leaning his weight casually against the desk, expecting Julian to cave just like every other subordinate who had ever faced his threats. "Survival looks good on you, Julian. Just sign over the port authority credentials, and—"
Before Viktor could finish his sentence, Julian pulled open the bottom drawer. He didn't pull out a gun—he pulled out a secure satellite phone, already dialing a preset extension with one hand while hitting the desk panic button with the other.
Click.
Instantly, the heavy oak doors burst open. Four armed security specialists, men Julian had personally trained and trusted with his life, swarmed into the study, their weapons aimed directly at Viktor and his two bodyguards.
Viktor’s face drained of color. He straightened up immediately, his hands hovering defensively near his sides. "What is the meaning of this? You wouldn't dare—"
"I am still the head of this syndicate, Viktor," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute authority as he wheeled forward. "And you just committed an act of war by threatening civilians inside my home."
"You're paralyzed! You think your men will stay loyal to a cripple once I—"
"Mr. Moretti's rehabilitation is progressing quite nicely, Mr. Vance," a cool voice interrupted from the doorway.
Dr. Bennett stepped into the room, holding a heavy metal tablet that displayed recent medical telemetry and neural scans. Behind her stood Arthur, holding a secure encrypted radio linked directly to the federal task force handling organized crime in Lakehurst.
Julian looked up at Viktor, his dark eyes burning with unyielding fury. "Arthur, escort our guests out. And let the federal prosecutor know that Mr. Vance has finally provided us with enough recorded audio and physical evidence to warrant a federal RICO indictment. Give them the flash drive from the hallway cameras."
"No—wait!" Viktor panicked, lunging forward, but the security guards pressed their weapon barrels firmly against his chest, forcing him backward.
"Get him out of my sight," Julian commanded.
As Viktor was dragged screaming out of the study, the heavy doors closed once more, leaving a profound, echoing silence in their wake.
Julian exhaled slowly, leaning his head back against the leather headrest of his chair. His shoulders throbbed with fatigue, but a heavy weight had finally lifted from his chest. The trap he had spent months setting for the rats in his organization had finally snapped shut.
Ten minutes later, a soft knock sounded at the door.
"Come in," Julian said softly.
The door creaked open, and Ellie poked her head inside, her stuffed rabbit clutched under one arm. Her big eyes scanned the room cautiously.
"Is the mean man gone?" she whispered.
Julian’s stern expression melted instantly. A genuine, gentle smile touched the corners of his lips. He opened his arms wide.
May you like
"Yes, kiddo. The mean man is gone."
Ellie ran across the sprawling Persian rug, clambered up onto Julian’s lap with complete fearlessness, and wrapped her small arms tightly around his neck. Julian wrapped his arms around her, burying his face gently in her soft, dark-blond hair. For the first time in three years, Julian Moretti felt entirely alive.
