Chapter 2 - The Weight of Silence

Julian’s chest heaved with ragged breaths, his teeth clenched so hard his jaw ached. The memory of the ambush on Route 9—the sudden shattering of safety glass, the blinding pain ripping through his spine, and the realization that a sniper had chosen him as a target—still haunted his waking hours. In those dark, solitary months, he had grown accustomed to the pitying glances and the quiet whispers of his guards. They treated him like a fragile vase about to slip from a shelf.

Dr. Bennett stood her ground, arms still crossed, refusing to back down. But before Julian could snap at the little intruder to leave, Ellie marched right up to the heavy steel rehabilitation table.

"You're leaking," Ellie said softly, pointing a small finger at the bead of sweat rolling down Julian’s temple.

Julian blinked, the fierce anger in his chest suddenly deflating like a punctured balloon. He reached out with a trembling hand, wiping his forehead with the back of his sleeve.

"It's just hard work, kid," Julian muttered, his voice raspy from disuse.

"Mommy says hard work makes your heart strong," Ellie replied with absolute authority. She climbed onto the heavy leather bench with surprising agility, ignoring Dr. Bennett's warning gasp, and patted Julian’s massive forearm. "You can do it. Even if you're grumpy."

Dr. Bennett stared in absolute amazement. In eighteen months, she had not managed to coax a single genuine smile or breakthrough from the former crime syndicate leader. Yet here was a three-year-old girl in an oversized yellow sweater working magic through blunt honesty.

"She’s right, Julian," Dr. Bennett said gently, adjusting her stopwatch. "Again."

Julian exhaled a long, shaky breath. He looked down at Ellie’s small hand resting on his arm, feeling a faint warmth seep into skin that had felt numb to the world for far too long. Slowly, painstakingly, he gripped the parallel bars beside him. His knuckles turned white, his biceps straining until the veins stood out like thick cords.

"One," Julian grunted, his body lifting a fraction of an inch off the cushion.

"Two!" Ellie cheered, clapping her hands together.

Down the hallway, Claire was folding fresh linens in the linen closet when she heard the faint sound of laughter coming from the physical therapy wing. She froze, a stack of pillowcases clutched tightly against her chest. In the two months she had worked at the Moretti estate, she had never once heard laughter echo through those stern, marble halls.

She walked softly toward the doorway, peering inside just enough to see Julian—the terrifying man her fellow staff whispered about in hushed tones—sweating, shaking, but refusing to quit under the watchful, adoring gaze of her daughter. A tear slipped down Claire's cheek, quick and hot. For the first time since Ryan’s death, she felt a tiny flicker of hope that life might somehow find a way forward.

Unbeknownst to them, however, the heavy oak doors of the mansion’s main entrance were opening. A man in an immaculate Italian wool suit stepped inside, accompanied by two armed bodyguards.

It was Viktor Vance. And he had come to collect what he believed was rightfully his.
