Chapter 7 - A New Dawn

The silence in the grand office stretched for a heartbeat, thick with the weight of everything they had both endured. Claire looked from Julian’s determined face down to his legs, steady and braced against the floor, and then back into his eyes, where the fierce, unyielding hardness had completely melted away into raw, honest vulnerability.

A single tear slipped down Claire's cheek, but a radiant smile broke through her expression.

"Yes," Claire whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "Yes, Julian. We'll stay."

Before Julian could take another step forward, his legs wobbled slightly from the immense strain of holding his weight after years of atrophy. Instinctively, Claire stepped in, wrapping her arms securely around his waist to steady him as he gently leaned against her shoulder, letting out a breath that was half-laugh, half-sigh of relief.

"Looks like I still need a little help," Julian murmured softly against her hair, a self-deprecating smile playing on his lips.

"That's what partners are for," Claire replied, resting her head gently against his chest.

From the corner of the sofa, a sleepy little voice piped up.

"Are you guys hugging?"

Julian and Claire pulled back slightly, looking over to see Ellie rubbing her eyes, clutching her stuffed rabbit in one hand and looking at them with a mixture of curiosity and sleepiness.

Julian chuckled, kneeling down carefully—with Claire’s steadying hand on his shoulder—until he was eye-level with the little girl.

"We're not just hugging, Ellie," Julian said, a warm, bright smile lighting up his rugged face. "We're making it official. We're a team now."

Ellie’s face lit up instantly. She scrambled off the sofa and threw her arms around Julian’s neck, nearly knocking him backward. "Does this mean I get a puppy?"

May you like

Julian laughed, wrapping his arms around her and lifting her into the air. "A puppy, a pony, and as many cookies as your mom will allow."

Arthur Bell, who had been standing quietly outside the slightly ajar door with a tray of fresh coffee, wiped a sudden tear from his eye, turned around, and walked back down the hall with a quiet, satisfied smile on his face. The curse of the Moretti estate was finally broken.
