Chapter 8 - The Exhibition

I turned around to see my mother, Lily, Mason, and even Karen walking down the aisle toward our booth. Karen was holding a small banner that Mason had drawn, which read: Go Owen!

Owen looked up, his eyes widening.

"We wouldn't miss this for the world, Owen," Lily said, giving him a gentle high-five.

Karen walked up to Owen, looking at him with genuine respect. "Your model is incredible, Owen. You worked so hard on this."

"Thank you, Aunt Karen," Owen said quietly.

When the panel of four judges arrived at Owen's booth, the ambient noise in the hall seemed to fade. One of the judges, a senior architect from a prominent firm, looked at Owen's intricate 3D-printed layout of the sensory-friendly community center.

"Tell us about the inspiration behind this layout, young man," the judge asked.

Owen looked at me, then at his cousins, and took a deep breath. His voice started out small, but as he spoke about his project, his confidence grew. He explained how traditional public spaces often overwhelm neurodivergent individuals and how his design balanced acoustics, natural lighting, and intuitive navigation to create a space where everyone felt safe.

He didn't stutter once. He spoke with the quiet authority of someone who truly understood his craft.
