Chapter 4 - Confronting the Hidden Truths

Over the next two weeks, the full extent of Karen and Mitch’s household chaos began to unravel.
It turned out that Karen had spent years maintaining a lavish lifestyle on social media—designer clothes, luxury vacations, expensive home decor—all funded by hidden credit cards and unpaid bills. Mitch, oblivious and consumed by his own heavy drinking, had ignored the warning signs until the debt collectors started calling their house.
My mother called me one Tuesday evening, sounding older and more tired than I had ever heard her before.
"Rachel," she sighed into the receiver. "Karen and Mitch are separating. Mitch moved out to stay at a motel, and Karen... she's a mess. She can't pay the mortgage."
"I figured as much," I admitted softly, chopping vegetables for dinner.
"I feel so ashamed," Mom said, her voice cracking. "I let her talk down to you and Owen for years because I thought she had it all together. I thought she was the 'successful' one. I was so blind, Rachel."
"You were trying to keep the peace, Mom. But peace bought with cruelty isn't real peace."
"I want to make it up to you and Owen," she begged. "And I want to help those kids. Lily and Mason shouldn't be paying the price for their parents' arrogance."

We decided to set boundaries. I made it clear that I would not lend Karen a single penny directly. However, my mother and I established a joint account dedicated strictly to Lily and Mason's living expenses, school supplies, and therapy.
Meanwhile, Owen was working on a secret project of his own.
