Chapter 3 - The Aftermath in the Yard

The birthday cookout ended in complete ruin.

Mitch didn't wait to hear Karen's excuses. He grabbed his truck keys from the picnic table, shoved his hands into his pockets, and marched toward the driveway without saying a word to anyone. The heavy thud of his truck door slamming echoed across the neighborhood, followed by the roar of his engine as he sped off, leaving cloud dust hanging in the humid Ohio air.

Karen stood alone near the grill, her polished facade completely shattered. "You ruined Dad's birthday," she spat at me, her eyes brimming with furious tears. "You pulled this pathetic stunt just to embarrass me!"

"You embarrassed yourself the moment you decided to use my disabled son as a prop to make yourself feel superior," I replied, standing up and holding out my hand to Owen. "Come on, sweetie. Let's pack up."

Owen grabbed his jacket, but before we could walk to the car, Lily ran over to us. Mason, her eleven-year-old brother, had finally come out of the house, looking bewildered and anxious.

"Aunt Rachel... I'm sorry," Lily choked out, wiping her cheek with the sleeve of her hoodie. "I didn't mean to make things worse."

I pulled both Lily and Mason into a quick, warm hug. "You didn't make things worse, Lily. You told the truth. I'm always here for you guys, okay? Nothing changes that."

As we drove home, the silence in my car was gentle. Owen sat in the passenger seat, staring out at the passing green cornfields.

"Mom?" he asked softly, his fingers fidgeting with the zipper of his jacket.

"Yes, buddy?"

"Are... are cousin Lily and Mason going to be okay?"

I looked at him in the rearview mirror, my heart swelling with pride. Even after being humiliated in front of the entire family, his first thought was about his cousins. "I'm going to make sure they are, Owen. And what about you? How are you feeling?"

Owen looked down at his trembling hands, then lifted his chin. "I'm not a project."

"No, you're not," I said fiercely. "You're my son. And you are going to build a wonderful life."
