Chapter 5 - Small Victories and Hidden Talents

Despite his motor delay, Owen had always possessed a remarkable eye for detail. While he struggled with quick conversations or crowded places, he had a deep passion for digital drafting and 3D modeling.

Two years prior, I had saved up to buy him a modest graphics tablet. Every evening after finishing his homework, he would sit at his desk, meticulously designing intricate, eco-friendly architectural models on his computer screen.

One afternoon, I walked into his room to bring him some fruit.

"Look at this, Mom," Owen said, pointing his pen at the monitor. He had created a complex, beautifully detailed design for a small community garden with accessible ramps, sensory-friendly shaded areas, and automated irrigation.

"Owen, this is extraordinary," I said, genuinely amazed by the complexity of the design. "Did you build all of this from scratch?"

"Yeah," he murmured, a rare, proud smile touching his lips. "Mr. Harrison, my draft teacher at school, said I should enter it into the Statewide High School Design Competition. But... I don't know. What if people laugh?"

I sat down beside him, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Owen, remember what happened at the barbecue? People who hurt others usually do it because they're afraid of their own failures. You have talent, heart, and dedication. Don't let anyone's cruel words keep you from showing the world what you can do."

He looked at his screen, then at me, and nodded once. "Okay. I'll enter."
