Chapter 10 - The Table We Gather Around

Two years later.

It was another summer Sunday, and we were back in my mother's backyard.

The old picnic table was covered with a fresh tablecloth, bowls of fruit, grilled burgers, and homemade lemonade. But the energy in the yard was completely different from that bitter afternoon two years ago.

Mitch and Karen had officially divorced, but they maintained a peaceful, cooperative co-parenting relationship. Karen had recently received a promotion at her job, moving into a cozy townhouse where Lily and Mason had their own rooms and a sense of absolute security. Lily was flourishing in her second year of college, and Mason was the star pitcher of his Little League team.

Owen was now eighteen, taller, confident, and completing his freshman year at university with top marks.

He was sitting at the end of the picnic table, showing Mason how to use a basic drafting program on a tablet. Mason was listening intently, laughing as Owen showed him how to build a virtual treehouse.

Karen walked over to me, carrying a tray of iced tea. She sat down beside me on the bench.

"Look at them," Karen said softly, watching Owen and Mason head-to-head over the screen.

"They've come a long way," I smiled, taking a glass from her.

"We all have," Karen said sincerely. She turned to look at me, her eyes filled with gratitude. "Rachel... thank you. For stopping me that day. If you hadn't brought my world crashing down, I would have kept destroying my family without ever realizing it."

"I did it to protect my son," I said gently. "But I'm glad it helped yours, too."

My mother walked out onto the patio, holding Dad’s birthday cake. Everyone gathered around the table—laughing, talking, and helping one another pass plates.

No one was a "project." No one was superior. We were just a family, whole and healed, sitting around a table filled with love, respect, and peace.
