Chapter 9 - THE CLEAN SLATE

Six months after the trial, the California sunshine felt warmer and brighter than it ever had before.

Brandon and I finalized our amicable divorce. He remained true to his word: he transferred full ownership of our home and our investments to Nancy and me, and he continued to attend weekly co-parenting counseling sessions. He had transformed into a genuinely attentive, dedicated father who finally prioritized his daughter above corporate ambition. While we would never be husband and wife again, we had forged a peaceful, respectful co-parenting partnership for Nancy's sake.

I enrolled in a professional graphic design program—the very online courses Evelyn used to mock—and earned my certification with top honors. Within a few weeks, I landed a fantastic remote job working as a lead designer for a prestigious creative agency in Los Angeles.

For the first time in my life, I was completely financially independent, self-assured, and entirely in control of my own destiny.

One Saturday afternoon, Nancy and I sat together at the exact same dining room table where the nightmare had once begun. Now, the table was covered in bright finger paints, glitter, and colorful construction paper.

"Mommy, look!" Nancy cheered, holding up a bright, sparkly drawing of two smiling princesses standing outside a beautiful castle. "This one is you, and this one is me! We're super-heroes!"

I smiled, pulling my little girl into a warm, fierce embrace, kissing the top of her golden curls.

"Yes, sweetheart," I whispered softly, looking out the window at the bright blue sky. "We are."
