Three months passed in a blur of legal depositions, physical therapy sessions for Nancy, and quiet rebuilding.
Nancy made a full physical recovery, though she still wore a small, faint scar across her abdomen—a permanent reminder of a nightmare we had successfully survived. She was back to her bubbly, cheerful self, drawing princesses with colored pencils and giggling at silly cartoons in our newly painted living room.
Brandon kept his distance, respecting my boundaries while quietly paying every single medical bill and legal fee without argument. He had moved into a small apartment downtown, attending court-mandated counseling and desperately trying to prove himself as a better father during his scheduled weekend visits with Nancy.
Meanwhile, Evelyn’s defense team tried every trick in the book. They claimed the security footage was manipulated by artificial intelligence, arguing that modern deepfake technology could fabricate a video of anyone doing anything.
My heart skipped a beat when I heard about their strategy during a prep meeting with our prosecutor, Ms. Gable.
