Chapter 7 - INSIDE THE COURTROOM

The courtroom of the San Diego Superior Court was packed to capacity. Flashbulbs popped outside as reporters from local and national news outlets gathered to cover what the media had dubbed "The Magnetic Malice Trial."
Evelyn sat at the defense table, wearing a drab orange jumpsuit instead of her usual designer wool suits. Her hair was unstyled, and she looked ten years older than her actual age. She refused to look in my direction as I took the witness stand.
The prosecutor guided me through my testimony with gentle, professional precision. I recounted the terrifying night Nancy woke up crying, the frantic drive to the hospital, the horrifying X-ray showing thirty-six glowing metal beads, and the moment I logged into my security app to reveal the dark truth.
When defense attorney Mr. Henderson stood up to cross-examine me, he tried to rattle my composure.
"Mrs. Vance," he sneered, adjusting his glasses. "Isn't it true that you felt neglected by your husband’s frequent business trips? Isn't it true that you harbored intense resentment toward your mother-in-law for her high standards, and that you staged this entire elaborate scheme to exact revenge on the entire family?"
I didn't flinch. I looked straight into his eyes, then turned my gaze toward the jury box.
"My daughter nearly died on an operating table," I said, my voice ringing clear and steady through the quiet courtroom. "She had to have part of her intestines surgically removed because a cruel, narcissistic woman wanted to destroy me by hurting an innocent child. No mother on earth would ever put her five-year-old baby through agonizing pain just to win an argument. The only person who wanted to destroy this family is sitting right over there."

I pointed a firm finger directly at Evelyn.
Mr. Henderson had nothing else to say. He stuttered, mumbled a weak "No further questions," and sat down in defeat.
