Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER'S REVENGE

Over the next three days, Nancy’s resilience amazed the medical staff. Children possess a miraculous healing power, and though she was still pale and weak, her bright smile began to return whenever I read her favorite bedtime stories.

Meanwhile, the legal system moved swiftly.

Because of the crystal-clear cloud footage and the detailed medical report from the pediatric surgeon, the District Attorney’s office filed multiple severe felony charges against Evelyn Vance: attempted murder of a minor, aggravated child abuse, and tampering with evidence. Bail was denied due to the extreme nature of the crime and the clear flight risk posed by her substantial offshore assets.

Brandon tried everything to win back my forgiveness. He resigned from his high-profile position in Phoenix, canceled all future business trips, and practically camped out in the hospital hallway, sleeping in a hard plastic chair outside Nancy's room. He apologized endlessly, crying tears of genuine remorse, begging for a second chance, and offering to sign over our house and his entire savings account to secure our future.

"I don't want your money, Brandon," I told him calmly on the fourth morning, as sunlight streamed through Nancy’s hospital window. "I want a divorce."

Brandon froze, a look of sheer devastation crossing his face. "Samantha, please... give me a chance to fix this. I know I was blind, I know I failed you and Nancy, but I can change. I'm a different man now."

"You are a different man now only because your world completely collapsed," I replied steadily. "If that camera hadn't caught your mother red-handed, you would have let the police throw me in prison. You would have let me lose my child forever just to keep peace with your mother."

He opened his mouth to argue, but no words came out. He knew I was right. The trust had been shattered beyond repair, pulverized into dust the moment he looked at me in the emergency room and asked, “What did you do to her?”

"We will work out a legal custody agreement through our lawyers," I continued, my voice calm and unyielding. "You can see Nancy, but under strict supervision. As for us? We are done."
