Chapter 3 - THE SWEET POISON

The air in the consultation room grew so heavy I could barely breathe. On the screen, the video continued to play silently, capturing every horrifying detail of a betrayal so calculated it made my stomach churn.

"Look closely," I whispered, holding the phone directly in front of Brandon’s face. "Look at your mother."

On the display, Evelyn pulled something small and round from the velvet pouch. It gleamed with a dark, metallic sheen under the dining room chandelier.

"Here is a special treat for my favorite little princess," Evelyn’s recorded voice echoed softly from the phone’s speaker, crystal clear due to the high-quality microphone embedded in the camera. "Grandma brought you some magic metallic candies. But you have to promise not to chew them, Nancy. You have to swallow them whole, one by one, like magic pills. If you chew them, the magic disappears."

On the video, five-year-old Nancy looked up with innocent, trusting eyes. She beamed at her grandmother, completely unaware that she was swallowing tiny weapons of destruction.

"Are they sweet, Grandma?" Nancy's small voice asked on the recording.

"Oh, they are the sweetest secret in the world," Evelyn replied on screen, popping one of the high-powered neodymium magnets directly into the little girl's mouth. "Just swallow. Good girl. Now here’s the next one..."

One by one, over the course of ten agonizing minutes, Evelyn fed thirty-six high-powered magnetic beads to my baby.

Brandon stared at the screen, his face draining of all color. The arrogant, self-righteous expression he had worn since walking into the hospital completely evaporated, replaced by a mask of sheer horror and disbelief. He looked from the glowing screen to his mother, who had backed herself into the corner of the small room, her hands trembling uncontrollably.

"Mom..." Brandon whispered, his voice cracking. "What... what is this? Why did you do this?"

Officer Elliott didn't wait for Evelyn to answer. He stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. The metallic click echoed sharply in the quiet room.

"Evelyn Vance," Officer Elliott said, his voice cold and official. "You are under arrest for the aggravated assault and intentional poisoning of a minor."

"No! No, you don't understand!" Evelyn shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into a frantic, hysterical mess. She pointed a shaking finger at me. "It was her! Samantha forced me to buy them! She wanted to frame me! She hates our family!"

"The camera doesn't lie, Mrs. Vance," Officer Peters said calmly, sliding his tablet out to begin the formal evidence transfer process. "And neither does the cloud timestamp."

As the officers gripped Evelyn’s arms and led her toward the door, she let out a piercing wail, glaring at me with eyes full of pure, unadulterated venom. "You ruined my life! You destroying bitch! Brandon, do something! Don't let them take your mother!"

Brandon didn't move an inch. He stood frozen, staring at the empty doorway long after his mother had been dragged out into the hallway.
