Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Sanctuary
The jury returned a verdict in less than two hours: Guilty on all counts, including felony child abuse, attempted grand larceny, and obstruction of justice. The judge sentenced Lorraine to eight years in state prison without the possibility of early parole for the first five years, alongside a permanent lifetime restraining order prohibiting her from approaching Emma or our family.
When the judge’s gavel struck the sound block, a profound weight lifted off my shoulders. The terror that had hovered over our house like a dark cloud finally dissipated into thin air.
In the months that followed, life slowly began to rebuild itself on a foundation of peace and genuine security. Emma began attending weekly play-therapy sessions with a wonderful therapist named Dr. Aris, who helped her process the trauma and understand that she was never, ever at fault for the actions of a hurtful adult.
