Chapter 5 - The Web of Deceit

An hour later, Officer Davis called my personal line to update me on the arrest. What had transpired at Lorraine’s manicured suburban home was nothing short of a spectacle.
When the police officers arrived at Lorraine's front door, Mark had already arrived. Having finally zoomed in on the photograph himself, Mark was standing on the front porch in a state of absolute fury, confronting Lorraine through the screen door. Lorraine, realizing her narrative was collapsing, had attempted to claim that her phone had been hacked and that the image was a digital fabrication.
However, when officers searched the premises with Lorraine’s consent—which she arrogantly gave, believing she could outsmart them—they discovered something far more damning in her home office.
In her desk drawer, officers located a hidden journal and a secondary laptop containing detailed logs Lorraine had been keeping for months. It turned out that Lorraine was deeply in debt due to failed real estate speculations and had been plotting to petition the court for custody of Emma by framing me as an unfit mother. Her goal was to gain access to the substantial trust fund left to Emma by her paternal grandmother—a fund that Lorraine desperately needed to liquidate to cover her financial fraud.
"Mrs. Miller," Officer Davis explained over the line, "this was a premeditated campaign. She was actively collecting photos, manufacturing stories of behavioural issues, and attempting to turn your ex-husband against you to force a custody transfer."
I sat at the kitchen table, clutching a warm mug of tea, shivering at the sheer malice of it all. Lorraine had looked me in the eye every Sunday, hugged my daughter, and brought her toys, all while plotting to tear our lives apart for money.
"Is she in custody?" I asked.

"She is currently processed at the county jail," Davis confirmed. "Charged with felony child abuse, filing false police reports, and attempt to defraud. Bailable condition is set high due to flight risk. You need to request an emergency protective order tomorrow morning at the courthouse."
"I will be there the moment the doors open," I swore.
