Chapter 6 - Confrontation at the Threshold

The next morning, the sun broke through the storm clouds, casting a crisp yellow light across the city. After dropping Emma off with my trusted mother—who wept tears of outrage upon learning what her other daughter had done—I headed directly to the county courthouse to file for a permanent Restraining Order against Lorraine.
As I walked up the marble steps of the courthouse, I saw Mark sitting on a bench near the entrance, his face pale, his eyes rimmed with red. He looked broken, stripped of the arrogance he usually wore like armor.
When he saw me, he stood up quickly, taking a tentative step forward before stopping himself.
"Sarah," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I... I don't even know what to say."
"You don't have to say anything to me, Mark," I replied coldly, keeping my distance. "You listened to her for months. Every time Emma came home upset, every time Lorraine made a subtle remark about my parenting, you took her side."
"I was blind!" Mark choked out, tears welling in his eyes. "I thought she was helping us! I saw the photo last night... I zoomed in... Sarah, I felt sick to my stomach. How could she do that to our little girl?"
"Because you let her create a wedge between us," I said firmly. "You were so eager to find fault in me after the divorce that you handed our daughter over to a predator in a designer suit."
Mark hung his head, shoulders shaking as he quietly sobbed. "I will do whatever it takes to fix this. I'm supporting every charge. I hired a private criminal prosecutor to assist the district attorney. Lorraine will never get out of this."

I looked at him, seeing genuine remorse for the first time in years. "If you truly want to make amends, Mark, you stand in that courtroom today and tell the judge that Lorraine is a danger to Emma. You protect our daughter."
"I will," Mark promised, looking up at me with absolute resolve. "I promise you, Sarah. I will."
