Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise

As evening approached, the birthday guests departed, leaving behind the quiet stillness of a golden sunset. Mark helped me clean up the paper plates and decorations before giving Emma a big hug and heading home, promising to take her to the zoo that coming weekend.
I walked Emma up the stairs to her bedroom. The room was bathed in the soft pink glow of her nightlight, filled with stuffed animals and drawings pinned neatly to the walls.
Emma climbed into her bed, pulling her favorite polka-dot comforter up to her chin. I sat on the edge of the mattress, running my fingers gently through her soft hair.
"Did you have a good birthday, sweetheart?" I asked softly.
Emma nodded happily, her eyelids growing heavy with sleep. "It was the best birthday ever, Mommy."
She reached out her small hand and rested it over mine. She looked into my eyes, her expression peaceful and completely trusting.
"Mommy?" she whispered.
"Yes, baby?"
"Thank you for finding me behind the washing machine that day."
My heart swelled with an overwhelming wave of love and gratitude. I leaned down and kissed her forehead right above her nose.
"I will always find you, Emma," I promised, my voice thick with emotion. "No matter where you hide, no matter what happens, Mommy will always find you, protect you, and bring you home."

Emma smiled, closed her eyes, and within minutes, her breathing became slow and rhythmic as she fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.
I sat there in the quiet room for a long time, watching her sleep safely in the warm light. The shadows of the past were completely gone, replaced by the unbreakable bond of a mother's love and the bright promise of a beautiful tomorrow.
