Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Perfect Sister

While Officer Hernandez carefully recorded Emma’s small, hesitant words, my phone rang again. The caller ID displayed Mark’s name. My ex-husband had spent the last two years since our divorce taking Lorraine’s side in almost every family dispute, convinced that his former sister-in-law was the voice of reason.

I answered on speakerphone, keeping my composure cold and focused.

"Sarah! What on earth is going on with Emma?" Mark’s voice boomed through the speaker, laced with anger. "Lorraine sent me a picture of her heirloom vase destroyed! She said Emma was throwing a tantrum and throwing things around the house! You need to get control of our daughter!"

"Mark," I interrupted, my tone icy enough to freeze water. "Where are you right now?"

"I’m ten minutes away from Lorraine’s house! She called me crying, saying you were neglectful!"

"Listen to me very carefully," I said, each word deliberate. "Look at the photo Lorraine sent you again. Zoom into the dark cabinet behind Emma. Look at Lorraine's reflection. She broke the vase herself, Mark. And then she struck our five-year-old daughter across the face so hard it left a handprint."

Silence filled the line. For five long seconds, there was only the sound of Mark’s heavy breathing.

"What... what are you talking about?" Mark stammered, his righteous indignation instantly deflating.

"The police are at my house right now," I continued. "Paramedics are checking Emma for a concussion. Cruiser units are currently en route to Lorraine's house to execute an arrest warrant for child abuse and falsifying evidence. If you want to see the truth, go to Lorraine's house right now and watch them put your perfect sister-in-law in handcuffs."

The phone line went dead. Mark had hung up, no doubt scrambling to examine the photograph he had so blindly accepted minutes earlier.

Officer Hernandez finished taking down the notes and gave Emma a small sticker shaped like a police star. Emma managed a faint, genuine smile—the first piece of light returning to her eyes since this nightmare began.

"We have enough for a full arrest warrant, Mrs. Miller," Hernandez assured me, standing up. "Lorraine Vance will not be coming anywhere near Emma tonight."
